Last game of the season. We're down 20. I take a charge from some giant kid and he absolutely levels me to the ground.

My brother tells me to get back in.

I told him no.

And then he snapped.

In front of everyone – our team, the other team, every parent in that gym – he looked directly at me and shouted:

"Alright then…sit on the bench, you FAT ASS"

The entire gym erupted.

Every single person.

I was 11 years old, sitting on that bench, listening to every insecurity I had get confirmed out loud in public. The kids on my own team were trying to hide their laughing out of pity. That made it so much worse.

I went home that night and my mother asked if I wanted anything to eat.

Normally those words were music to my ears.

Not that night.

I told her no. Went outside and ran.

Did the same the next day. And the day after. That's how I found training.

Fast forward a decade.

All I wanted was to be in undeniable shape… to be “that guy”

But I kept getting ejected back to zero

Two separate times I geared myself up for another “run”, fought with everything to make progress, restricted myself so heavily, got so close…

And lost it all

Both times because of surgeries 

(First a blown knee, then a broken finger)

I was giving everything, only to have my dream ripped away from me… twice

Eventually I just said fuck it. I am going to eat however the fuck I want and no more training.

I went off the rails. Despite over half a decade of hard work towards this one goal, I began to completely sabotage my efforts.

Purposely hit the elevator down button on my life and willed myself to rock bottom.

I got into the worst shape of my life and genuinely believed at that time I would stay that way for the long haul.

Then my family took a trip to Turkey.

We were on a boat tour through the Mediterranean and the guide pulls over and asks if anyone wants to jump in. I said yes without even thinking about it.

Then I went to take my shirt off.

And I felt it. Eleven years old all over again.

I jumped in as fast as I could and kept my body underwater the whole time.
